CelebriDIY Inspiration: Devon Aoki’s Silk Scarf Dress

Image via The Fashion Court

Silk scarves are very popular this season. I first feel in love when I saw the Spring 2012 collection (here).Β  Domenico and Stefano must have pulled out every silk scarf from the Dynasty archive fashion closet to create that collection. It was heaven! I’m a fan of the silk scarves but except for turbans I wasn’t sure how to work them into my wardrobe. That was until I laid eyes on Devon Aoki rocking her silk scarf Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti maxi dress to the Lexus LAWS OF ATTRACTION exhibition this week. I was instantly inspired!

With the help of two scarves, needle, thread and a yard of ribbon I added a new DIY dress to my wardrobe. It might look a little complicated but I promise you it’s easy breezy with a construction time of only about 20 minutes.

Materials:Β 2 Square Scarves, Ribbon, Needle and Thread

First, we will create the neck of your dress. Fold down one end of the four corners as pictured above. This will be the top of your dress so be sure the pattern is the direction you desire. Stitch the fold in place leaving 1 inch hole to run the ribbon through at the top. Repeat on the second scarf.

Now, we must sew up the sides of the dress. Place the two scarves directly on top of each other.

Hand stitch the left edges together and then the right.

Construction tip: the more of the edge you stitch up, the less skin will show.

Now, slide the ribbon through the hole you created at the neck. Repeat on the second scarf.

If you wish, add a belt to define your waist.

Enjoy! xo

    • I can’t sew a straight line on a machine to save my life! But thanks for the encouragement. I might have to give it another shot ;-)

This sounds so simple! But I feel like they can’t be just “any” square scarves . . . should they be particularly large?

    August 9, 2012 at 11:53 am

    • Yes, the larger scarves work best. This one is about 3′ x 3′. I opened up the scarf in the store to make sure I liked the length. But the smaller silk scarves make the perfect halter top ;-)
